PalliCHAT#6: Advance Directives, Living Wills, ACPs: Medico-legal Aspects

It is not unusual for there to be a period - preceding a patient's death - where the patient lacks decision-making capacity and complex decisions have to be made which may be life and death in nature. Indeed the legalities may even extend to far less complex and more mundane decisions. This PalliCHAT is aimed at raising and exploring some of these issues.

    Graham Howarth is a Stellenbosch trained obstetrician and gynaecologist who turned his hand to and completed a Masters in Bioethics (initially due to an interest in maternal and fetal tensions and conflicts) and then medical law. For over 20 years he has been a medico-legal consultant working for the Medical Protection Society in the UK. One of his particular interests is where medical and legal uncertainties intersect - where better than this area of uncertainty?
